From the Manufacturer The Coolpix 8800 and its newly developed CCD offer 8.0 effective megapixels for an astoundingly high resolution of 3,264 x 2,448 pixels. Quality like this makes images of exceptionally high definition possible--even when cropped. 10x Zoom-Nikkor ED Lens The 10x zoom gives you the power of a 35-350mm (35mm equivalent) lens, while macro capability lets you get as close as 1.2 inches (3 centimeters) from your subject. This combination is supported by Nikons world-renowned optical technology, with two Pro-Quality ED glass elements that delivers crisp, clear images while minimizing chromatic aberration--all of which helps realize the full potential of 8.0 effective megapixels. Lifelike Image Reproduction The Coolpix 8800s exclusive image processing technology takes true-to-life images a step closer to reality. A 256-segment matrix metering system enables optimal exposures in even the most challenging lighting environments, while Matrix Auto White Balance neutralizes color deviations created by ambient light sources. Both advanced features allow the Coolpix 8800 to preserve a faithful reproduction of color, detail, and gradation. The Coolpix 8800's Vibration Reduction (VR) system. Vibration Reduction (VR) Nikon's VR (Vibration Reduction) technology is an exciting feature that allows sharp photographs to be taken when the camera cannot be held perfectly still. Vibration Reduction offers the ability to shoot at shutter speeds of more than three stops (or eight times) slower, without the risk of camera vibrations blurring your image. Camera shake occurs when the small movements of your hands cause an image to blur when the shutter is released. With Nikon's VR system, angular velocity sensors detect camera movement and then calculate the direction and width of the blurred area. Using this calculation, the VR unit automatically adjusts to the camera vibrations by compensating for image movement on the CCD. VR's steadying effect is easy to see, not only in the images you take, but also on the LCD/viewfinder when shooting. Nikon's VR system offers the ability to shoot at shutter speeds of more than three stops (or eight times) slower, allowing for steady images in low-light settings. Use the active mode for best results when shooting from a moving vehicle. With the 10x zoom providing a 350mm (35mm equivalent) range, image blur will always be a concern when you're not using a tripod. VR cuts down on image blur--even when using high-powered zoom lenses. Image blur is always a concern in low-light shooting situations. VR lets you take steady shots without a speedlight or a tripod. It is also effective for slow sync flash shots. Sometimes you want to capture the flow of movement with a slow-shutter shot. VR makes it happen while keeping the background steady and clear. Use Normal mode to compensate for only non-intended camera movement (camera shake). In this way, you can express motion in the background while keeping the subject in clear focus. VR also works for the camera's movie modes, meaning clear and steady movie shots are easier than ever. VR is effective when attaching the telephoto converter (TC-E17ED) with UR-E17, as well as the wide-angle converter attachment (WM-E80). That means shooting at shutter speeds of more than three stops is guaranteed from 28mm wide-angle to 600mm telephoto (35mm equivalent). The VR system works in multiple settings and modes, enabling shake-free movies, as well as zoom and macro images. Scene Modes, Auto and Manual Setting For the ultimate in creative control, choose between automatic, aperture priority, shutter priority and full manual settings. Or choose one of 15 scene modes to automatically adjust controls for great pictures instantly. With a choice of 15 scene modes, you can quickly select the most appropriate mode for the scene you are capturing. Macro: Allows shooting as close as approximately 1.2 inches from your subject. Movie mode: Capture live action with sound. Clips are saved as a QuickTime movie, which can easily be e-mailed to family and friends. Metering Choose your preferred light metering system. Select Nikon's exclusive 256-segment matrix, center-weighted, spot, or autofocus (AF) spot metering options. (Use matrix metering for general shooting, center-weighted for a central subject, spot for emphasis on a particular area, and AF spot to lock metering and focus on a particular area. The in-camera red-eye fix corrects most typical instances of red-eye during the picture taking process. By the time you're ready for your next shot, the camera has already fixed and saved the image, without the red eyes. Autofocus Contrast-detect TTL-AF, center, auto 5-area multi AF, manual 9-area multi AF selectable. AF Assist Illuminator makes sharp focus possible when the subject is not well lit. Flash A hot shoe lets you connect an additional Nikon speedlight (flash) to the top of the camera. The six-mode built-in flash includes auto, red-eye reduction (by pre-flash), anytime flash, flash cancel, slow sync, and rear-curtain sync. Features one-touch upload for easy image transfer from camera to computer. D-lighting Improve images shot with strong back lighting or in shadow. While in playback, select the D-lighting function, apply it and save the corrected image. D-lighting fixes underexposed and backlit images without harming the properly exposed areas of your image. PictureProject Software Nikon PictureProject is a fast and powerful tool for organizing and working with your pictures easily and intuitively. PictureProject will let you transfer your pictures from your camera seamlessly. You can then edit, remove red-eye, enhance, crop, print, e-mail, post pictures to the Web, or create a photo album. You can even publish them to your PDA, create slideshows with music, or stitch together a number of pictures to create a stunning panorama. With Nikon PictureProject, you can spend more time taking pictures instead of managing them and then easily store, organize, and share your memories. PictureProject will work with Windows 98 SE, 2000, Me, and XP, as well as Mac OS X (10.1.5 or later).
